PDF Password — Remove Open Passwords and Permission Restrictions
StayPDF's Password tool removes the open-password from PDFs you have the password for, so you no longer need to type it every time you share or attach the file. PDFs with only permission restrictions (no copy, no print) can be unlocked without a password at all.
All processing happens inside your browser. Your file and password are never sent to any server. No account, no installation, completely free.
What this tool can do
- Remove the open-password when you know it
- Unlock copy/print-restricted PDFs (no password needed)
- Output a PDF that opens without prompting
- Both file and password stay inside your browser
- Works on Windows, Mac, and mobile
How to remove a PDF password
- Choose a PDF: Drag and drop the protected PDF, or use the file picker.
- Enter the password: Type the password the PDF was set with. If the PDF only has permission restrictions, leave the field blank.
- Unlock and download: Click the button — your browser produces an unrestricted PDF and downloads it.
Frequently asked questions
I forgot the password — can this recover it?
No. This tool is not a password cracker. You need to know the correct password.
What does the output PDF look like?
The pages are reconstructed as images inside a new PDF. For permission-only restrictions, the lock is simply lifted.
Can I unlock a copy/print-restricted PDF without a password?
Yes. If the PDF only has permission restrictions (not an open-password), leave the password field empty and run the tool.
Are my files or password uploaded to a server?
No. Everything stays inside your browser; nothing is transmitted.
